Refurbishment of historic market square at the commercial heart of the town. We were lead designers for team comprising Civil Engineers, M&E Engineers, Traffic Engineer, QS, Conservation Architect, and specialist Fountain Designer, from strategy development through to contract administration and hand-over.
The project entailed extensive public engagement, and included revised traffic management through the Square; creation of shared surfaces and changed priority pedestrian crossings; contemporary paving and street furniture; seating and performance area; provision of public artwork reflecting historic associations; inter-active fountain feature; distinctive feature lighting, formal tree planting and raised shrub areas.
The Square has since achieved a renewed vitality, hosting numerous public events and performances, regular markets and as a central gathering space. Cafes have opened in and around the space, a ‘big screen’ has been installed and there has been increased interest in vacant surrounding properties. Traffic speeds have considerable decreased and the space is generally more accessible to a far wider range of people.
