Limerick City Public Realm Strategy

Limerick City Council

Competition winning strategy and subsequent commission for public realm improvements to streets, open spaces and riverside, aimed at revitalising the City Centre experience and optimising the potential of the waterfront.

Our role was lead designer of multi-disciplinary team comprising Civil Engineers, M&E Engineers, QS, and Health & Safety specialist, responsible for all design stages from strategy to handover.

The outcome has been the successful delivery of public realm projects (value in excess of €30m), on time and within budget, entailing multiple stakeholders and complex implementation constraints (busy city centre environment; heritage considerations; competing vehicle and pedestrian movements; service and emergency access requirements; utility infrastructure co-ordination; and health and safety aspects).

The various projects have helped address the previous dominance of traffic, declining footfall on key commercial streets and around the riverside, and the general lack of optimism in the role of the city centre in the face of changing retail circumstances.
